Today in History

1831: HMS Beagle departs England, with Charles Darwin aboard.

1900: Carey Nation smashes her first bar.

1904: Peter Pan opens in London.

1956: A conservation “law” is disproved by experiment. It was thought that no experiment could distinguish left from right, that “parity” would be conserved in all experiments. Madame Chien-Shiung Wu at Columbia University showed that the beta-decay of cobalt-60 can in fact be used to do so; the universe leans to the left.

Happy Birthday to:

1571: Johannes “Silver Nose” Kepler (Oops! It was Tycho Brahe with the silver schnoz. Thanks for the correction, Joe.)

1822: Louis Pasteur. “Chance favors the prepared mind.”

1901: Marlene Dietrich
